Most people who book a professional detailing service for the first time have a clear idea of what they want the result to look like but no real understanding of what the process involves. This article covers what that process actually involves from initial consultation through to vehicle collection, so the decision to book is made with a clear picture of what is happening to the vehicle and why.
For new car owners and EV buyers who have recently taken delivery, this is particularly relevant. The preparation process before a coating or film installation is not simply cleaning the vehicle. It is preparing the surface at a level that determines how well the protection product performs over the years ahead.
Why Professional Detailing Is Different to a Standard Wash
Professional detailing at a specialist workshop is a different category of service to a car wash, a drive through detail, or the preparation service a dealership performs at delivery.
A professional detailing service is a process driven, assessment-led approach to paint and surface care that begins with understanding the current condition of the vehicle and ends with returning it in a genuinely improved state. It is not a template service applied the same way to every car that comes through the door. The products used, the techniques applied, and the level of work involved are calibrated to what the specific vehicle needs based on what the assessment finds.
The Initial Enquiry and Consultation
The process begins before the vehicle arrives at the workshop. When you contact Jidosha Customs to discuss a first appointment, the conversation covers what the vehicle is, how long you have had it, how it has been used, and what you are hoping to achieve from the service.
For a new car owner or EV buyer, the answer to most of these questions is straightforward. For an owner of an existing vehicle looking to correct surface damage and apply protection, the consultation involves more discussion about what the paint currently looks like and what level of correction might be needed.
This conversation shapes the recommendation before any booking is confirmed. We do not apply a standard package to every vehicle because the right outcome for a new Tesla Model Y is different to the right outcome for a two-year-old prestige vehicle with accumulated swirl marks and water spot etching. The recommendation reflects what the specific vehicle needs.
What Happens When the Vehicle Arrives
On the day of the appointment, the vehicle comes to our Springvale workshop and the first stage is an assessment under controlled lighting. This is not a cursory look over the exterior. It is a systematic examination of the paint surface under conditions that reveal what normal showroom or daylight inspection does not.
Under the controlled lighting we use, surface defects that are invisible under ambient light become clear. Swirl marks, fine scratches, water spot etching, contamination bonding, and oxidation all present differently under professional lighting than they do in a car park or under household lighting. This assessment is what informs the preparation approach for that specific vehicle on that specific day.
For new vehicles and EVs delivered recently, this assessment frequently reveals transport related marks and delivery preparation residue that the owner had not noticed and that need to be addressed before any coating or film is applied. This is not unusual and it is not a reflection of a problem with the vehicle. It is a normal part of the delivery and transport process that professional preparation addresses.
The Wash and Decontamination Stage
Following the assessment, the vehicle goes through a thorough multi stage wash and decontamination process. This is significantly more involved than a standard wash.
The exterior wash removes surface dirt and loose contamination using appropriate products and techniques that minimise contact abrasion on the paint. Following the wash, a chemical decontamination process targets bonded contamination that the wash alone cannot remove, including iron particles from brake dust and rail corridors, tree sap, industrial fallout, and in Melbourne's environment, the residue from fruit bat activity that is particularly acidic and damaging to unprotected clear coat.
For EV owners, this stage also removes the transport film adhesive residue, delivery centre preparation products, and handling contamination that new vehicles carry from the production and shipping process. This contamination is invisible to the naked eye but affects how protection products bond to the paint surface, which is why the decontamination stage cannot be skipped regardless of how new the vehicle is.
The vehicle is then carefully dried before moving to the next stage.
Paint Correction Where Required
Following decontamination, the paint assessment findings determine what correction work is needed before any protection product is applied.
For a vehicle in good condition with minimal surface defects, this stage may involve a light polish to restore gloss and remove any minor marks from the assessment findings. For a vehicle with more significant swirl marks, water spot etching, or oxidation, a more involved multi stage correction process removes those defects progressively until the surface is in the condition required for the coating or film to perform correctly.
Paint correction on a first visit can be a revelation for many owners. The difference between paint that has been through a professional correction process and paint that has only ever been washed is the difference between paint that looks the way it did when new and paint that has accumulated the residue of every wash and environmental exposure it has been through. Most vehicles, even relatively new ones, benefit from at least a light correction before protection is applied.
At our Springvale workshop, we do not apply correction as a blanket service regardless of the vehicle's condition. The level of correction recommended is based on what the assessment finds and what the owner's goals are for the result.
Coating or Film Application
Once the surface has been prepared to the required standard, the protection service the vehicle is booked for is applied.
For ceramic coating or graphene coating, the product is applied panel by panel in a controlled sequence that ensures consistent coverage across the vehicle. The coating bonds chemically to the clear coat during application and begins its curing process from the moment it is applied. The installation environment at our Springvale workshop is controlled for temperature and airflow during this stage, as both factors affect how the coating bonds during application.
For self-healing PPF, the film sections are cut precisely to the vehicle's panel geometry and placed with care to ensure clean edges and correct tension across the surface. On EV models with large, flat panel surfaces, this stage requires both precision and patience to achieve the visually clean outcome these vehicles require.
Interior coating on leather, fabric, and hard surfaces is applied as a separate stage that follows the exterior work.
Collection and Aftercare Guidance
When the vehicle is ready for collection, we walk through what was done, what was found during the assessment, and what the aftercare requirements look like going forward.
For a coating installation, the aftercare guidance covers the initial care period during curing, including how to wash the vehicle safely in the first days after installation and what to avoid during that window. We cover the washing approach that preserves the coating's surface performance long term, the signs that a maintenance detailing visit is worth booking, and the interval we recommend based on how the vehicle is used.
For first time customers, this guidance is part of what makes a professional detailing service worth choosing over a standard wash. The vehicle leaves the workshop in better condition than it arrived, and the aftercare guidance gives the owner a clear picture of how to maintain that going forward.
